April Lockett is orphaned right before her courting season. Bereaved, she declines the extended hospitality of Adam Hugh Senior. She determines to find whatever husband will take her and love is of no concern.

Soon, a young but rude gentleman, Isaiah Whitfield, asks for her hand in marriage. April is willing to accept his offer despite her dislike of him.

Aware of her plight, Adam Hugh Senior calls on the help of his younger brother, Abel. Though well past his courting days, the middle aged bachelor agrees to court young April.
