Prologue: The Runner

It is 1942 and America has barely begun its fight in World War 2. Bobby Campbell, an ex-fighter pilot, is imprisoned and awaiting trial for leaking sensitive war secrets. But he is given one last chance to redeem himself: escape from prison, defect to the Soviet Union, and convince his ex-fiance, currently fighting in Russia, to spy for the United States.

Meanwhile, Karen Hamilton, the woman who broke Bobby's heart so she could fight beside her Russian lover, experiences the tragedy and triumph of war during one of history's bloodiest battles: Stalingrad.
