Chapter 1

"Liam." I grab for his hand, shivering in the dark. "We will live. They are coming to save us." I say. "I know where we're going." He says, looking down at the crackling fire. Thats the last thing I hear as the explosion swallows us.

Blackness. Perhaps it is our worst enemy, perhaps our greatest friend. Maybe what's behind the darkness is good, maybe bad. But I'd rather have nothing than risk suffering and pain. I hear a hum in the distance, like the ringing of one's ears when underwater and the pressure becomes too great. And for this second of peace and serenity, this quiet moment of life leaving the body,

I am calm.
