Description
Ranching in the middle of the Nevada desert was never an easy job, but it was the one she grew up doing. Raised in a small town with a small family, Bryenna Rogers was the only daughter of one of the last ranchers in her hometown to hold out from selling their cattle to the government, but the outfit her dad still runs is shrinking quickly. Every calf counts, and losing one could mean losing their house, or the truck, or having to sell a horse to make up the difference. With the last two years having been short on water, it is getting harder than ever to maintain healthy herds, and healthy herd numbers. But her father is just as stubborn as he's always been, and he has no intentions of giving up the life he has worked so hard to keep. And so they get up with the sun every morning, and work until the job is done—or until the sun goes down, whichever comes last. But calves are still dying, herds are vanishing in the never-ending maze of mountains, and ends aren't meeting up. Her only option appears to be trusting her family and her livelihood in the hands of a man set on destroying the ranch and running her out of business—but the help he offers is almost more than she can stand to refuse. In the midst of a crumbling family legacy and the impending extinction of the only world Bryenna has ever known, a contest for survival has intruded on her home, threatening to kill her father and strand her. As she struggles to endure, a strength unlike anything she has ever known is fighting to rise to the surface, but will desperation force her to surrender before it can take root?
