It's even harder when you're basically taking care of your mother who's a drug addict and young brother. It's also hard dealing with the murder of your father and the lost friendship it caused. It's hard being alone, and even harder knowing you've caused it yourself. Maria is living this hard life, with built up anger, and resentment towards her mother and the murder. She is sent to the new counselor to "help" her with moving on from her past.
