Olivia "Liv" Newell is a seventeen year old girl from New York City. Liv is constantly bullied at John Kennedy High, until her best and only friend, Alexa "Lexa" McGuire takes her to see Derek and Julianne Hough at Radio City Music Hall. Liv and Derek touch hands during the show and they run into each other afterwards.
