Emery has lost everything during the apocalypse. The one thing she can't lose is Carl. Carl hasn't lost anything, but if he loses Emery, he will never forgive the world. Emery loves Caleb but grows feelings for Carl when they get lost together, just Carl and Emery. Carl shows his love for Emery everyday, so she will notice that they are perfect for each other.
