It's difficult to believe such a bold statement when it comes from the mouth of a child. Living in Wayward, the singular place on earth after The Ghost Plague that reverted back to the simplicity of the 19th century, the young boy sees only his sheltered world. The world he has found himself highly placed in at the expense of his long-since-gone parents has more secrets than the ones he has of his own. A secret only he and his house staff know; all but one, that is.
