Jacko Jones - hard as nails. Labourer. Heavy drinker. Gambler. Former prize fighter. Wife and 9 children. Lil Jones. Jacko's wife and mother of Rose Jones Rose Jones - daughter of Jacko, assistant at a Grocer's. Young William 'Bill' Sewell - only 17. Volunteered underage. Formerly apprentice labourer. Lieutenant Nisbet-Lindley, platoon leader East Surrey Regiment. Mick O'Connor - their friend and fellow labourer. Married with 13 children. Irish guards.
