Description
Carter St. John, a sixteen-year-old high school student, lies broken on the pavement, left to die after a hit-and-run. As his body gives out, his mind refuses to surrender - clinging to memories, to dreams, to everything he still hoped to become. He rages against the dying of the light, realizing, with aching clarity, that this might be the end. He starts accepting his fate and is ready to let it all go. "No one is coming to save you. You cling to everything and everyone around you, and yet... here you are... alone. As sadness, self-reflection, and the thought of leaving everything behind threaten to consume him, Carter is saved by his rage, which manifests as a hallucination: a spectral, warped version of his own fury given physical form. Standing above his own broken body, he says: "Someone is waiting for you-to see that you have a home to come to. A home you must fight for. A home worth building. Carter, you must fight; she would not forgive you." Then, the past unravels in vivid fragments as the sirens and flashing lights draw near. His mind leaks into the past, the laughter of friendships, the rush of first love, the sting of betrayal. Memories flood him, raw and relentless, pulling him back through the wild, beautiful chaos of coming of age.
