Katherine is part of a tight-knit group of friends-JJ, John B, Kiara, and Pope-who've grown up together and have always had each other's backs. As the pogues deal with the usual drama of life on the island, things start to shift when John B begins dating Sarah Cameron, a kook from the wealthier side of the island. At first, Katherine and the pogues aren't sure what to make of Sarah, but soon she and Katherine form a close bond, becoming best friends. However, as Katherine spends more time in Sarah's world, she finds herself unexpectedly drawn to Rafe Cameron, Sarah's brother and the so-called "kook king." This forbidden attraction forces Katherine to grapple with her identity as a pogue, her loyalty to her friends, and the complicated feelings she has for someone from the very world she's always been told to hate. Throughout the story, Katherine faces tough choices about love, loyalty, and the ever-present divide between pogues and kooks.
