Colette Beaumont has finally started to put herself back together after a messy breakup and has sworn off loving anyone forever. As Colette goes through the ups and downs of beginning college, she realizes that love isn't as easy to escape as she thought it was. Carter Holmes,a boy whole literally stumbles into her life, makes this point very clear every time he speaks to her. He constantly compliments her and makes her feel loved, something she lacked in her childhood. She realizes that maybe his motives and reasons behind it may not be as genuine as she may have hoped, then she becomes closed off and isolated.
