In Arabian folklore, they are remembered as Djinn. In the Far East, the Shang religion called them spirits. To the ancient Greeks, they were Gods. Cultures throughout history invented their own legends based on the forgotten Guardians, eight almighty elemental warriors, led by Azool, wielder of storms, but there hasn't been a true guardian in over three-thousand years. At least until a cocky British teenager is struck by lightning.
