When Miss Anne Oliver flees her home in search of employment, she seeks a governess position with a widower Navy Captain and his three children. At first, his rigid demeanor and harsh attitude makes her want to leave, but her love for the children, especially the youngest daughter, makes her stay. Captain Harding is soon captivated by the young governess and invites her to accompany him to be his guest to various events, but his previous life and duties always seem to keep them from pursuing each other until a drunken night he has takes it too far with her. Now she feels she has no place there as his governess and must leave.
