Prologue

Mel is going through the motions of day to day work, with not much of an aspiration for her future. She is hung up on her childhood first love, Jem, who disappeared down at the country creek when she was eleven. Leaving for the city as a young adult, Mel found herself tangled in the toxic web of Colin Holt, but with the help of her gay best friend Harley, she was able to get out, vowing to be single for the rest of her life. That was until she met Joey, the brunette barista at the local coffee shop with the most amazing green eyes. After a rocky start, Mel and Joey build a deep friendship, to the point Mel thought she knew Joey. Joey accidentally reveals she's going to take a job in the country, which transports Mel back to her childhood and her childhood crush Jem. Detective Beaumont turns up on Joey's doorstep; figuring out her secret, he threatens to reveal the past she's so desperately left behind and buried. Mel joins Joey back at her family farm, under the suspicion Joey is hiding a dark secret about Jem's disappearance. Joey seems to be glowing in the country, with her childhood friends Travis and Callie, and Mel becomes resentful and jealous. But as she spends the days watching Joey, Mel's feelings for her friend seem to grow in a way she can't deny. Things between Joey and Mel begin to grow, when Colin shows up asking about Jem. Mel, with the help of Harley, navigates the puzzle of the past and present and the undeniable connection she has with Joey. Colin's narcissism, pulls Mel back into his web, putting Joey in life threatening danger and Mel realising she might lose Joey forever.
