"Someone recently asked me who I'm closer to. 'Your mom? Or your dad?' And stumped, I seriously tried putting thought into their question. But it was the 'or' in between Mom and Dad that made it impossible to answer. 'Or' doesn't fit between my mom and dad because there is no space for it to sit. When they're physically apart or even while they're upset with each other, I still see my mom in my dad and my dad in my mom. I guess I just never perceived them as two separate people, which sounds silly, but for how I was raised is my truth. So I told the person, 'Neither. I'm close to my parents and that is all. It's impossible to tug at one of them and not pull the other along. Letty and Prince Nelson are One-and me and my siblings are an extension of their love.'"
