"In a life filled with unvoiced and therefore unanswered questions, if there was one thing with which Wan Xue was familiar, it was confusion." Wan Xue has never spoken, so far as he can remember. While his muteness innately comes with its share of difficulties, those difficulties reach unprecedented levels when he's arrested for a crime and has no means to defend himself. It's no small crime either: he's been accused of raping the emperor's sister. Enraged, the emperor, Meng Yuan, forces himself on the accused as retribution for his crime - a crime Wan Xue didn't commit. While he has no explanation for anything that follows his arrest, he has no means to question why the emperor's sister cares for him in prison after accusing him of assault, or to question why he's released from the slavery contract that was his sentence. All he wants is to leave the city and start over, but the emperor reappears in his life - now with no memories of his life or his identity. Meng Yuan requests to accompany Wan Xue out of the city and, thinking this could be his chance to take revenge, Wan Xue agrees. However, as time passes and the two journey across the country together, he begins to recognize that the situation is much more complicated than he ever could have imagined.
