The Grandmother Dragon's call reaches their ears, and his beloved friend, his lovely Albertine, without hesitating or looking back in his direction, flips sideways, dislodging him from her back and flies away without a word. Ellis falls, plummeting through the morning light, his tears wiped dry by the wind, his scream lost in his throat. "Albertine," he calls, but cannot compete with the Grandmother's bellow. "Don't leave me!"
