Avelina receives a strange invitation to a debutante ball that happens once every five years.

The host, Zandor Eleazar is a prickly and charismatic vampire, beautiful to a fault. He often loses himself over his obsession with prominence. When Avelina (a half human-vampire) discovers the true nature of the debutante ball, this leads her towards a quest of vengeance for two reasons. (a, her vampire mom abandoned her. b, a vampire killed her boyfriend)
