Description
Neelkanth Mahadev Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, India, about 32 km from Rishikesh. The temple is perched on a hilltop at an altitude of 1330 meters. The temple is said to be the place where Lord Shiva consumed the poison Halahala that originated from the sea during the Samudra Manthan. This poison that emanated during the Samudramanthan (churning of the ocean) made his throat blue. Thus, Shiva is also known as Neelkanth, literally meaning The Blue Throated One. The temple is a popular pilgrimage site for Hindus. It is especially crowded during the month of Shravan when devotees from all over India come to offer prayers to Lord Shiva. The temple is built in the Dravidian style of architecture. It has a large dome and a gold-plated spire. The main shrine of the temple houses a Shivling, a representation of Lord Shiva.
