A young man in the thirteenth century named Nicodemus Toscani, who lived during times of the horrendous Black Death, is convicted of heresy for his belief in scientific practices instead of Orthodox medicine. He is saved and taken in as as apprentice by a doctor who treats the victims of bubonic plague using the secret scientific practices Nico has adamantly supported. From then on it is a fight tooth and nail for health, peace, and the pursuit of what Nico believes is true.
