Before her first year, first day, first hour at Hogwarts, Madeline Wilde's life had been most usual: lovely and nice. She had eaten madeleine pastries and baked cakes for picnics, prayed to the stars and read children's stories. But the books and tales never mentioned little girls who could speak to shadows.
On her first night at Hogwarts she touched a boy so dark inside, so cruel that the shadows awoke all around her. They whispered, they knew things no one else knew. The same night she vanished from Hogwarts like the wind; it was for her own good.
Five years later, Madeline Wilde returns to the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. But darkness is difficult to escape, just as you can never escape your own shadow.
