Two mothers give birth almost at the same time in a maternity ward on a cold, rainy day in Palermo, Italy. They are Lúcia and Michelina.
During the birth Lucia has complications and it is necessary to remove her uterus, much to the sadness of her husband Tiziano.
Hours later, the couple's daughter dies from heart problems.
In an attempt to hide the fact, Salvatore, Tiziano's brother and who has always been in love with Lucia, bribes nurse Rosario to exchange his dead niece for one of the twins from the next room.
