Prologue

After spending years trying to better the world as a U.S. Marshall, Anson Colter has given up on ever making a difference. He has turned in his badge and sold everything he owned except his trusted horse and is going to start over in California. Perhaps there is still enough gold for him to strike it rich and live a quiet life, alone and away from everyone. All he knows is he's through trying to help people. That is until he finds a woman, all alone in the middle of the prairie. He could just leave her there and pretend he never saw her, but will his conscience let him when he knows just how dangerous it could be?
