What if Red had found Apo, saving his life, and they went back to the clearing together and exposed Owen, but then Apo, upon being betrayed by his best freind, confronted Owen in prison. What if the confrontation drove Apo to semi-madness, and he went off and did something terrible too. What if the clearing members realized that sanity and morals can collapse instantly in moments of weakness...
