You steal stuff for Units, you're a team with your best friend and you're in outer space. Your friend gets offered a deal to grab an simple orb from an abandoned planet for lots of Units. Easy right? So you grab your stuff and go, not thinking much of it. On that planet you come across a human. Yeah, ANOTHER HUMAN. He's annoying though, so who cares. Claims he's an outlaw too, named 'Star-Lord'. Which idiot nicknames himself, right? However, he screws up your plans and steals your orb. You decide to follow him without realizing your entire life is gonna change because of that little incident.
