Prologue

"How do you feel about life?" I shuffled, nervous because I had no idea how to ask this question. "I mean, how is it? Not having an arm and an eye?"
She looked at me, with one eye, trying to read what I was feeling, and gave me such a simple answer. "I wouldn't know what it's like to have two arms. This is normal for me. For such things I have not experienced, or felt, I have no need for them." She closed her eye. "This is normality. I never knew what it was like to have a second arm, and so I will never feel the need for it."
And the truth hit me harder than anything had ever before.
