Description
I stare down at my tattered robe feeling its striking green cling to my gaze longfully. There was once a point in time when this robe was considered an honor to wear. The very body it clung to was granted the ultimate respect for merely being in its presence and now, it's nothing more than a vile reminder of the evil that I let happen. My gaze pulls away from the green, landing on the mirror before me. Dirt smudges my face, caking small scratches that travel along my cheeks. My freckles are no longer visible under the reminder of my wrongdoing. I pull my hand to my face, my knuckles bloodied and worn. The same knuckles on the very hand I was once told looked delicate enough to break with a strong enough handshake. Would she have told me that if she had known what I'd done now? "It's not your fault." A familiar voice quietly utters behind me. His footsteps were so silent I hadn't even noticed his arrival. His eyes find mine in the mirror's reflection. Bruises encase his face in various shades, his light comforting eyes nearly void of all expression. Unlike me, he still wears his robe with pride as if all of our actions leading up to now haven't changed everything. I held hands with the devil and became a pawn in his sick game, and now he stands here, mocking my moral compass with his arrogant confidence. "I believed you, every step of the way. Everything you ever told me was for your own self-gain. You made me believe that even for a second you cared about something more than curing her. People died because you couldn't leave it alone." I nearly scream, the weight of our actions causing the air to become thin.
