Madame Mildred, dean of the Between, reappears after the death of Rafal and takes on the title of dean for a new classification of students. Those who are not too evil nor too good, most of whom are readers. She has a past, part of which only Lesso knows; the rest, no one knows. What happened to her all that time ago after Rhian was killed and Rafal stole his identity? Where had she been? Dovey gave her the title, but Lesso didn't know it was her until orientation. Not to mention the three of them are now the heads of the school.
