When 28-year-old Marian discovers she's pregnant, she knows her long-time boyfriend will insist they marry. Marian's fears that her pregnancy will commit her to a marriage based on duty rather than love force her to face her own past, as well as that of her mother, Anne, and grandmother, Maria.

Over three days, the women acknowledge complicated truths about sex, marriage, and motherhood, truths they've worked hard to hide and deny, even from each other.

Set in Memphis, Angelus unfolds from the alternating perspectives of the three women, which illuminate their particular interpretations of the catholic "Hail Mary" prayer, the words spoken by the Angel Gabriel to inform Mary that she is with child.
