In the Beginning

When Hera learns of Zeus's indiscretion that brings about Athena she knows that she must do something to get revenge. She decides to have an indiscretion of her own which results in the birth of Hephaestus. Upon seeing his disfigurement, Hera is ashamed and throws him off of Mt. Olympus where he should have died. But he doesn't. Instead he is brought up in a monastery and trained to become a blacksmith. He is leading a happy human life with a prosperous career and even the promise of true love, that is until he learns of his true parentage.
