16-year old Janet Cross has always been a mystery. Adopted by the cruel and harsh ruler of Mellifluous, she doesn't know who her real parents are, where she came from, nothing. There's only one thing that's clear; she has a mysterious scar on her cheek, and no one knows how it came to be.

Things change, though, when a rumor spreads through the district that Janet's adopted father never chose her; he was forced. Suddenly, her world turns around. Does her adoption have something to do with her scar? Why was her adopted father forced to take her in? And most importantly, who is she?
