Commander Bruce Maddox and Data have a long history. For the first few years of his activation, Data was confined as a prisoner for Maddox's research. He was conditioned to repress his feelings and desires - all in the name of 'science.' As a result of this abuse, it took Data years to realise his own personhood.

On the eve of a significant personal milestone for Data, Maddox returns with orders to take Data into custody.

Data's friends must rally to save him. But this task will take its toll.
