The only way to reach the higher levels of society is by completing the Trial, a series of brutal fights between individuals who have trained since the age of ten. The Capitol only wants the best of the best reaching them, and the Trial is the best way to weed out the weak. Asher has developed close friendships with a group of Trial participants, and though they insist he is capable, he as already chosen to stay in Haven. Ignoring even the words of the girl he loves, he stands by his choice. Until one day, when everything he has planned for his future is thrown away without his consent. On his new path, Asher must face a new set of struggles, putting him in difficult situations where he must lie, cheat, and fight in ways he never has before.
