Harry is sent to the past to try stop Tom Riddle from becoming Voldemort but he doesn't even try because he joins him. The reason he doesn't try is because Dumbledore is paying Ginny, Hermione and Molly to be nice to him and giving him love potions keyed to Ginny when he is gay.
