The old leader of ThunderClan has passed and now it's time for his deputy, Mottlesplash to take his place. But when StarClan refuses to give Mottlesplash his nine lives, they name Swiftshadow, a lazy and careless tom, the rightful leader of ThunderClan. Upset and jealous, Mottlesplash ignores StarClan's words and keeps Swiftshadow in the dark.
