It's been two years since the student Basil Farrow was announced missing. No one really knew what happened to him. Like everybody else in school, seventeen-year-old Creek Joosten is trying to put that horrible time behind him - easier said than done since one day Basil re-appeared in school. But when Creek realizes that he's the only person who can see Basil, and understands that Basil wasn't alive anymore, Basil and Creek make a deal: Basil helps Creek cheat in school, and Creek finds Basil's killer. Now nobody - not even his closest friends - is beyond suspicion. As Creek searches for Basil's murderer and uncovers the tangle of lies and false alibis he left in his wake, he grows suspicious of what really happened on Basil's last day.
