Living in an abusive home for years does something to your mind. Zayna desperately wished she could love her parents completely or hate them completely. When it was grey and not all black and white, and her mind and body had been what could best be described as in their control for years, leaving and creating a life of her own felt like asking for rain in a drought. Near unfathomable. There was little she enjoyed now. Her friends moved on, became adults, living on their own, and she felt stuck, in limbo, or regressing, and as if she were still a child. Zayna was 24 and she was adamant that she did not want to get married. Her parents however had other plans. Living in Canada for 21 years of her life, she had dreamed of falling in love - not her parents picking him out for her without her knowledge or input. Living under their roof, all she could do was bide her time. She had witnessed her older sister Faina get beat to the ground several times whenever Faina had said "no" or expressed her thoughts or preferences. She'd anonymously ask for advice and they would say, "just talk to them", or "just leave", ignorantly, as if she had not tried. She became a shell of herself. And yet tiny parts glistened in her poetry and her writing. In her witty jokes. And in the boy, now a man, she still held out for. This book explores the life of a brown woman living in the west, navigating abuse, depression, and a toxic culture. Would Zayna ever fall in love? Would she get out alive - really ALIVE?
