"Do you push all your friends into tiny broom closets or is it just me?" Lyra asks, rolling her eyes.

Unexpectedly, Black steps forward. Lyra takes a panicked step back, her back hitting the wall behind her. He raises a finger to gently stroke her temple and then in a uncharacteristically display of affection tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. All of a sudden Lyra is fighting to find her breath underneath the weight of his intense gaze.

"Only he," he murmurs, a sincere softness in his eyes that sends Lyra's stomach twisting.
