What better creature than to represent the embodiment of darkness, of pure, undiluted and resolute villainy than that of a corvid? Their shrilling call rings far beyond the living world, perhaps the call was not made for one that walks within the breathing plain, for we- Aspen- could not ever translate its hollowed cries. But tucked within a shallow grave or kept tightly in an urn would their shrieks be construed in a magical sense? A harmonious ode to the dead, an entire orchestra of wailing beauty. It was true, their calls scratched her eardrums, a threatening warning that she was not the indented interpreter.
