Her twenty-two-year-old adopted father/step-father, Charlie Swan, believed his wife is going through post-partum depression, and thus he raised Annalise with the help of his parents. However, Charlie does not know that Renee despises their eldest daughter since Annalise got conceived when Renee was seventeen on June 20, 1985, after getting drunk and sleeping with a random guy at a party. Renee could not help but blame Annalise for ruining her life. She even thought about aborting her daughter when she found out she was pregnant. But her mother, Marie Higginbotham, and the doctor did not allow it since Renee was three months pregnant and Annalise already had a heartbeat and was moving around when Renee found out. Three months later, on December 13, 1987, Renee divorced Charlie finding Forks depressing. Charlie immediately believed Renee would take both of their daughters, but to his surprise, Renee decided to take Isabella with her while she gave Annalise up to him. People around Charlie knew that Annalise isn't biologically his. They wonder why he didn't fight for Isabella and give Annalise back to Renee. Charlie agreed to take custody of Annalise and continue raising her since he had always had a soft spot for the year-old ever since he met her when she was four months old.
