Carter Smith is one of the most popular boy in Santa Cruz High School. He appears charming and welcoming to everyone. Attractive, tall, intelligent, and kind-hearted, it was no wonder many girls swooned over the 17 year old. It's senior year and gets randomly partnered with the only Muslim girl in school for a project in school. Although he was not exactly enthusiastic about it because of his own prejudices, he still treated her respect and ends up forming an unlikely friendship. Luby Torres is a Mexican-American Muslim. Her high school is per-predominately Hispanic, so one would think that would make the whole Muslim thing easier, because she is one of them, right? Other students were never explicitly mean, but they did go out of their way to make her feel like other. Fortunately, two girls took pity on her and took her in freshman, and they have been attached at the hip ever since. Unfortunately, her friends weren't in her History AP class, and her teacher paired her up with Carter Smith. "This is going to be really awkward," Luby thought.
