Melanie J. Roberts has always been an outcast, an outsider. She was what they called a Greaser, her hair was wild, and she could never stay out of trouble. Melanie has always kept to herself. She never bothered to make friends because she didn't want to go through the hurt of being left again. Losing her best friend in a fight against a group of Socs was enough.

When she's on the run from the fuzz, Melanie bangs on the door of the Curtis household. When the confused teenage Ponyboy M. Curtis opens the door and allows her in, she doesn't realize that the group of boys in the living room would have the biggest impact on her life.
