Dirren Redd: the Queen of Autumn

At the Seasonal Lyceum, every child knows the rhyme:

The Ascendant rules
The Moon surveys
The Sun battles
...and the Sacrifice pays.

This has kept the Seasonal Colleges at peace with each other and sixteen paths of magic they wield in line. However, every unknown number of years, a ritual must be performed that takes the 16 brightest witches and pit them against each other in battles to the death. Only one will survive and set the path for the rest of magic.
