"I shouldn't be surprised," I whispered as the stake hovered over my heart, "This is your job, isn't it?"

He didn't move, he didn't even blink.

"Can I ask you something before you do it?" My eyes didn't dare leave his, "Why didn't you kill me when we first met?"

"I was fully prepared to make the kill," his voice wavered, "I planned on quietly taking you out when you returned home but then I caught myself talking to you and. . . and I knew I couldn't carry the plan out."

A tear escaped from the corner of my eye and slowly trailed down my cheek.

It hurt. This hurt.

"Well come on, I'm wide open here, do it. I'm ready."

Who would've thought the man I'd fallen for would be the one that killed me.
