But it's not the typical cliche break up with a boy. She lost the only person who has ever cared about her, Mrs. Potts. Her fourth grade English teacher who has taken care of her since elementary school since her biological mother has always neglected her. On the walk home from Mrs. Potts' funeral, Aspen is met by a girl with pink hair and tons of tattoos. Even a piercing or two. This girl is completely opposite of Aspen. She's bubbly and colorful and creative while Aspen is dark, cold, and closed off. When the cotton candy haired girl's brother comes to pick her up, there are unspeakable tensions between Aspen and this brooding fellow and they haven't even spoken to one another.
