When partnered with Lucius Malfoy for potions, Salem Sioux is given a lot of one-on-one time with the pureblood wizard. Salem is able to see something in him that nobody else could see which makes her begin to fall for him. However, he was tied to Narcissa Black in an arranged marriage, set up by his father for when they graduate.
