Chapter 1: Introduction

I'd seen that face a million times. She was not merely seeing, she was observing. She was questioning me, interrogating my thoughts with her beautiful eyes.

"What would you like me to call it, Muriel? Love?" I asked.

"Would you be telling a lie?" She shot back.

I went silent for a few seconds. Then I sighed and sat down.

"I figured with college I'd just be able to move on and I'd find a husband and forget about this, forget about you. I think I could be happy enough," I said, folding my hands together, gazing at the tips of my boots.

"Could you be?" She asked, sitting besides me.

"As happy as I'd be able to without knowing that you love me too."
