Description

A recent drought reveals a town's darkest mystery: a cemetery filled with human skeletons. The remains are soon identified as those of children who disappeared over the years. Almost as fast, the police rush to make an arrest -- a known pedophile who has been a thorn in the town's eyes ever since he appeared in Hallstead ten years ago. Of course the guy claims he didn't touch any of the girls but who would ever believe a child molesting felon? The case is assigned to defense attorney Seb Robinson who is as convinced of his client's guilt as everyone else. But some of the evidence doesn't add up. Lauren Greenwald just moved to town in the hopes to make a name for herself as a tough-on-crime prosecutor. When the case of Owen Humphrey lands on her desk, she has no doubt she'll get a quick conviction. Two lawyers on opposite sides of the law. A defendant stuck in between. And a truth that everyone else wants buried. ~~~~~ This is my entry for the 2021 Open Novella Contest based on prompt #5: There is a terrible drought ravaging the land, but when the waters recede from the local lake/reservoir, they reveal something no one expected to find. ~~~~~ © Sal Mason 2021 This work is protected by copyright and should not be copied, downloaded, translated or used in any way without my expressed consent.
