Theo Banks and Thora Kingswell, both high school seniors, have known each other since they were in diapers. From affluent families, the pair have grown up not wanting for much. At least that's how it looks from the outside looking in. With big houses, exotic vacations, fabulous clothes, and good looks to boot, they're the envy of all their peers, and surely headed for the altar right after college. It isn't easy being Thora Kingswell, though, because being privileged comes with a price tag; there are myriad expectations to meet, parents to please, good grades to get, and futures to prepare for, and then, there's the real truth of Theo and Thora's ... um ... relationship. When a family member disgraces the Kingswell name, and a secret Theo has been keeping threatens to become exposed, suddenly everything Thora and Theo thought they knew about the world and their place in it begins to crumble. But what if life didn't have to follow such a rigid script? What if, when the chips were down, a full tank of gas, and a burger and some bad coffee in an-night diner with a friend were the only things a person ever really needed?
